Body contour surgery · revision planning · fat transfer
Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.
His assessment of a body contour begins with what was removed and from where, because the record explains the shape more reliably than the mirror does: a dent usually means more was taken from one spot than from the tissue around it, and knowing the pattern decides whether the answer is to fill or to remove. He examines the skin envelope as carefully as the fat, because skin that has lost its elasticity will not redrape over a corrected contour, and where that is the case he says so before discussing fat. He is deliberate about timing: he will not plan a contour correction while the tissue is still swollen, and he explains that waiting is what makes the plan accurate rather than cautious. Where the honest answer is that fat transfer would be needed to fill a defect, he says that plainly, because most patients arrive expecting more liposuction.
Clinical focus
Correcting a dent usually means adding fat
A hollow is a place where more was taken than from the tissue around it. Removing more from the surrounding area deepens the hollow rather than filling it, so the correction is usually a transfer of fat into the defect. That changes the plan, the recovery and the risk, and it is the single thing patients are most often not told before they arrive.
